The Managing Climate Variability Program fosters research and development on improving seasonal forecasting, providing access to climate information related to agricultural risk management, developing tools for tactical decision making, and adapting agricultural and natural resource management practices to Australia's climate variability. Land & Water Australia is managing the Program on behalf of industry partners: Dairy Australia, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the Grains R & D Corporation, Meat & Livestock Australia, the Rural Industries R & D Corporation, and the Sugar R & D Corporation.
The Program will invest $1 million over the next 3 years in projects targeted at improving the capacity of Australian farmers and natural resource managers to better cope with climate-related risks and opportunities. Projects proposals covering the following areas are invited:
- Improved Risk Management in Australian Primary Industries
- Improved Soil Moisture Predictions to Reflect Changing Agricultural Practices and an Increasingly Variable Climate
- Extreme Event Prediction for Primary Industries
Research proposals for projects that fall outside of these areas will be considered based on alignment with the strategic direction of the program.
Individuals, members of research organisations and universities, representatives of regional and industry groups are encouraged to apply.
