"at the forefront of... the key issues facing Australia"

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the Hon. Sussan Ley MP, has confirmed the reappointment of Queensland farmer Bobbie Brazil to the position of Chairman of Land & Water Australia for a further two years.

Mrs Brazil said she looks forward to continuing to lead the organisation at a time when its activities are more important than ever.

"Land & Water Australia is at the forefront of some of the key issues facing Australian agriculture and the community as a whole," Mrs Brazil said.

"With our funding partners, we are investing in programmes such as Managing Climate Variability and providing tools for farmers to remain sustainable and profitable in the face of climate variability and change.

"These include better forecasting of seasonal conditions and the impact of on-farm decisions on profits.

"We continue to collaborate with the other Rural Research and Development Corporations to improve natural resource management. Results include identifying best practice management in the wheat-sheep belt and a toolkit for wool growers to perform an environmental 'health check' of their land," Mrs Brazil said.

Land & Water Australia is also helping to tackle the nation's water crisis.

The National Program for Sustainable Irrigation has resulted in a host of on- and off-farm improvements in technology, planning and management that have helped irrigators become more efficient water users.

A significant research programme has also been established in Northern Australia to ensure further agricultural development is backed by the best scientific knowledge available.

"Through these and other programmes being managed by Land & Water Australia, we remain one of the leading agencies supporting investment in natural resource management," Mrs Brazil said.

"We are working hard to ensure the research is both adoptable and adopted, by placing a strong emphasis on partnerships with farmers, rural industries, communities and governments."

Mrs Brazil has held the position of Chairman since July 2001.

She is a partner with her husband in a broad-scale dryland and irrigation farming business on the Darling Downs and in the Goondiwindi region in Queensland and south of Katherine in the Northern Territory. The farming operation encompasses primarily grain, cotton and cattle.

She is a qualified lawyer with a special interest area in water law, particularly in Queensland, and is also currently Chairman of the Australian Landcare Council and Chancellor of the University Of Southern Qld.
