The Joint Venture Agroforestry R&D Programme (JVAP) aims to integrate agroforestry into Australian farming systems.
Agroforestry can improve agricultural productivity, diversify and increase farm income, conserve land, maintain biodiversity and contribute to the national timber supply. There are clear opportunities for expansion of Australia's forest estate through plantings on private land. It could become a widespread, profitable and sustainable system of land use.
JVAP has:
- developed an economic model to show agroforestry benefits;
- highlighted market links between farming and processing;
- reviewed the removal of impediments to farm forestry development;
- released information on tree water use and species selection;
- published guidelines for revegetating areas that have shallow, saline watertables; and
- released a report on tree performance databases and selection systems.
- Future developments will:
- emphasise the R&D underpinning the wider geographic spread of agroforestry and focus on new tree crop industries;
- improve availability of market information;
- develop a better understanding of the interaction of trees and the environment;
- develop design guidelines for agroforestry systems; and
- improve the availability of decision support tools for farm forestry.
The programme disseminates information through reports and newsletters. It has developed a new series of publications titled Water and Salinity Issues in Agroforestry and has produced the book Commercial Timber Species for Sub-tropical Australia.
