NPSI announces 2010-2011 student scholarships

The National Program for Sustainable Irrigation has selected students to undertake short term research scholarships this summer under the supervision of leading scientists. Each year four scholarships, each valued at $6,000, are provided to students completing the senior year of their university studies.

Investigations undertaken by scholarship recipients can produce valuable information for producers in irrigated agriculture. However, the most important outcome is the increased familiarity of students with science and industry, which hopefully will encourage interest in pursuing careers in irrigation research in either the public or private sector. Successful students for 2010-2011 are:

  • Jack Koci, whose project concerns furrow irrigation efficiency in sugar cane and rising groundwater. He will be supervised by Paul Nelson and Drewe Burgess at James Cook University.
  • Sam Ponce, whose interest is field procedures for evaluating irrigation. Supervisors are Rod Smith and Malcolm Gillies at the University of Southern Queensland.
  • Kevin Anthony, whose project is about water savings and automated fast flow irrigation technology for pastures. His supervisor will be Kithsiri Bandara Dassanayake at the University of Melbourne.
  • Xiaobo Liu, also at the University of Melbourne and under the supervision of Kithsiri Bandara Dassanayake, will undertake a project on water savings using wireless sensor networks.
