Understanding River Landscapes

This site enables you to explore how Australia’s rivers and riparian areas function, in scientific, managerial and social terms. We have brought together the myriad of interacting processes and human values that surround riparian management in Australi

Water Allocation to the River Murray wetlands

A basin wide modeling approach

How much water do the wetlands of the Murray River need? This project developed a model of the wetland plant community in 2,746 wetlands from the NSW and Victorian portions of the Murray River basin. The model used as data the average length of time out of each year each wetland was connected to the River Murray over the period 1990-2000. This value, called the connectivity, quantifies the wetting-drying cycle of a wetland. It describes the gradient between a (more)...

Water Quality History of Murrumbidgee River Floodplain Wetlands

The condition of floodplain wetlands is a function of internal and external forces and functions. Wetlands vary longitudinally down a floodplain following principals enshrined in the River Continuum Concept whereby the nature and concentration of solutes and sediments change with distance from source. This observation pertains directly to the main river channels but influences the wetland mostly in times of flood as,during low flow, connection between the river and the wetland may be severed.
