National Program for Sustainable Irrigation Publications

Irrigation Insights 5 - Water Use Efficiency: an information package

This publication forms part of the National Program for Sustainable Irrigation Irrigation Insights series. It explores some of the many facets of the term water use efficiency, and attempts to provide a simple, clear and concise guide to the topic. It also collates and summarises some of the current scientific and field knowledge, though with a rather ‘Australia-centric’ flavour. The publication was written to a brief that required the production of a compendium of current (more)...

Irrigation Insights 6 - Irrigation Decisions: from enterprise planning to the paddock

This publication combines the experiences and insights of irrigation consultants and extension officers with that of social, agronomic and engineering scientists. The resultant publication is targeted at those who advise, support and supply irrigation dependent enterprises with new information, tools and equipment.

Irrigation Insights 7 - Geophysics for the irrigation industry

Geophysical techniques involve the use of ground-based and airborne geophysical devices to measure physical properties of the earth. They can assist in the planning and management of irrigation developments by identifying the size and depth of aquifers, the connectivity between surface and ground water, the salinity of aquifers, the mineral composition and depth of the soil and the chances of successful water boring. Most geophysics applied to irrigation is in the form of imaging conducted (more)...

Irrigation Insights 8 Scenarios of the future: Irrigation in the Goulburn Broken Region

This report, entitled Scenarios of the future, describes four plausible scenarios, developed for this project, of how the future might unfold. It explores the likely impacts of those scenarios for regional business, communities and the environment. It considers how those groups might respond to challenges and opportunities. It also explores the implications for major regional agencies associated with irrigated agriculture, and illustrates how those agencies are implementing their responses. (more)...

Irrigation Insights Number 1 - Soil Water Monitoring

an information package 2nd edition

This Irrigation Insights information package brings together information on current equipment and techniques for measuring and monitoring soil water status, extending to their use as controllers in automatic irrigation systems. The main part of the package focuses on equipment with agents and backup within Australia. The hub of the publication is a collection of tables summarising the main product features. This enables product features to be compared quickly. As well as technical data, (more)...

Irrigation Mosaics in Northern Australia

The Northern Australia Irrigation Futures (NAIF) project has undertaken a review of research into irrigation mosaics as an approach to irrigation in northern Australia. Irrigation mosaics involve smaller patches of irrigation distributed across the landscape as an alternative to large contiguous areas of irrigation. This research has examined the current understanding of irrigation mosaics drawing lessons from ecology, forestry, meteorology and saline basins. This (more)...

Irrigation Policy in Australia and Experiences from Brazil and China

2007/08 IAL/NPSI TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP REPORT

Water policy in Australia is undergoing considerable and unprecedented change. Most recently, the emphasis on the sustainable management of water resources in the Murray Darling Basin has seen a shift of control from the States to the Commonwealth. The declining availability of water and the subsequent approaches taken by governments have come under increasing scrutiny from the public. Indeed, the actions associated with water policy in Australia, particularly water used for irrigated agriculture, have (more)...

Irrigation research issues

a discussion paper

This document outlines the process followed to determine the current priority issues for a national irrigation research program.

Irrigation Risk Management - Dairy Farmer's Kit

Tailoring water entitlement to suit your business

The kit provides case studies and structured worksheets for you to record your own figures in the kit framework. This should provide a pathway through the many decisions you must make in settling on the ‘right’ level of entitlement for your irrigation business. You will need to keep reviewing your decisions at least once every season.
