A framework for assessing the health of coastal waters: Qld trial

While the assessment framework and indicators described in this report are for use by a range of stakeholders from community to state government, the report is specifically written for the NLWRA (as a final report on a project to trial the national set of 19 estuarine, coastal and marine resource condition indicators in Queensland). As such it contains information and data that is in excess of the needs of the intended users. The purpose of the indicators provided (more)...

A Framework for the Identification of Wetland Condition Indicators

A National Trial – South Australia

The SAWCI project has developed a process for the identification of appropriate wetland condition indicators and a pilot framework for reporting on wetland condition. This has been done in conjunction with State Departments, interstate jurisdictions, Natural Resources Management (NRM) Boards and research organisations. The project undertook the following steps: 1. Draft mapping of the extent and distribution of wetlands by the South (more)...

A national baseline of the social and institutional foundations of natural resource management programs

The Natural Heritage Ministerial Board has tasked the National Land & Water Resources Audit (the Audit) with coordinating the development of national data standards and collation of data to support reporting under National Natural Management Monitoring an

A State wide baseline for the extent and distribution of native vegetation for Western Australia

Project Report

Vegetation extent is the definition applied under the National NRM Monitoring and Evaluation Framework. In this context the term extent is applied to the monitoring of Native Vegetation Communities Integrity. The concept of native vegetation communities extent, applied here, is quite different to that of cover as defined above. As well as the plants themselves, vegetation communities and the ecosystems they represent also consist of areas of bare ground or rock (sometimes (more)...

A synthesis report on the Audit regional/catchment

This synthesis report is a review of selected projects managed by the Audit on catchment condition reporting and the report card concept. This report includes: A categorisation and review of nine projects: Australian catchment, river and estuary assessment 2002 (Audit, State and Commonwealth agencies and CRC’s) Report (more)...

About the Audit

The National Land & Water Resources Audit (the Audit) collates data and information on the status of Australia’s natural resources and contextual social and economic information. The information is used to assist in identifying Australia’s natural resource management priorities and will be used to support the evaluation of current and future natural resource management (NRM) investments. The Audit is working with all (more)...

Acid Sulfate Soil Assessment

Coastal, Inland and Minesite Conditions

In this audit, key information and results from the following three Australian acid sulfate soil (ASS) weathering environments should be brought together and assessed: coastal ASS (tidal mangrove swamps) inland ASS (non-tidal scalds driven by saline acid-sulfate discharge conditions) minesite ASS (waste rock stockpiles or (more)...

Aerial surveys of waterbirds

Assessing wetland condition

Aerial surveys were able to distinguish different waterbird communities in terms of species richness, abundance and assemblages. While they suffered measurement error, aerial surveys easily separated waterbird communities on these measures. In addition we compared aerial surveys to ground surveys. There was reasonable agreement in numbers of species and abundance, although there was a tendency for aerial surveys to underestimate the number of species seen during ground counts. Some ground (more)...

Agriculture In Australia

Assessing invasive animals in Australia 2008

Invasive animals cause enormous damage to Australia’s economy, environment and society. "Assessing invasive animals in Australia 2008" presents, for the first time, consistent national information on the distribution and abundance of significant invasive animals in Australia. This report is the result of collaboration between the National Land & Water Resources Audit, the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre, and all states and (more)...

Assessing invasive plants in Australia 2007

The title on the inside cover of this product is: Assessing invasive weed species in Australia: the distribution of some major plants in Australia in 2007 Invasive plants or weeds may cause serious economic, social and environmental costs in many areas of Australia. Weed research and management are expensive, so investment in weed control requires information to ensure that attention is directed to areas of highest priority. Furthermore, the effectiveness of such investments in (more)...

Assessing the Environmental Performance of the Food Value Chain

An extension of the Signposts for Australian Agriculture Framework

The framework and guidelines proposed in this report provide a basis for consistent environmental reporting. The framework generalises the Signposts for Australian Agriculture framework that has been developed for the primary production sector so that it can be applied to any sector of the food value chain – primary production, storage, transport, packaging and processing. This provides an important link between the management of our natural resources and the goods and services our (more)...

Part A: Project Report, September 2004

This project is a key component of the National Land & Water Resources Audit’s (the Audit) program and aligns with the Audit’s Strategic Direction 1: Coordinate and foster the collection and collation of data and information as a basis

Assessment of Data Requirements and availability to address natural resource condition and trend indicators. Part B: report

Part B: Identification of data needs and potential datasets, September 2004

The lists of data needs for all the indicators were sent for comment to selected experts in national agencies and to representatives of the technical advisory groups that had largely been responsible for developing and documenting the indicators under
