The Vertebrate Pest Committee (VPC) as the National Coordinating Committee (NCC) for invasive species, asked the NLWRA to scope a data infrastructure and monitoring project, and to develop a National Invasive Animals Assessment work plan complementary to the National Pest Animals Strategy and the National Framework for Invasive Species Management.
The NLWRA’s objectives that will be met by this work plan include:
- Development and agreement of national indicators of invasive animals.
- A National Invasive Animals information system.
- National Invasive Animals information products for reporting against the Matter for Target.
Complementing these objectives, the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre (IA CRC) aims to reduce the impacts and risk of impacts of invasive animals through the application of new technologies, and by integrating approaches across agencies and jurisdictions.
The IA CRC’s objectives that will be met by this work plan include:
- Development of National survey and inventory procedures for invasive animal populations
- Establishment of national and local benchmarks for invasive animal impact, density and distribution via a survey and inventory of invasive animals
- An Australian Invasive Animals Information System containing invasive animal distribution information.
- Reduced risk of invasive animal impacts by forecasting and responding to potential, new, expanding and emerging invasive animal problems.
