1993 - 1998
In 1993 an intensive research program was developed to assist in minimising the impact of cotton pesticides in the riverine environment.
The major objectives of this program were to assess the impact of pesticide use on river ecosystems; to develop practical and economic methods to reduce the transport of pesticides from the farm to the riverine environment; and to provide a scientific basis for the development of best practice management guidelines and regulations (as opposed to political or emotional motivations).
To ensure the program maintained the highest standards of scientific rigour, an independent review was commissioned by Land & Water Resources Research and Development Corporation. The review commended the Cotton Model and its scientific rigour.
