The project aims to consult with, inform and engage Indigenous organisations and Traditional Owners in the water planning and decision making processes used to develop the La Grange Groundwater Management Plan. By working with all stakeholders, it is hoped that new approaches will be jointly developed to enable Indigenous people to actively engage in water planning.
This knowledge will contribute to current Department of Water policy development on Indigenous Access to Water. There will also be lessons learnt that could contribute to the development of “best practice” consultation with indigenous people.
Partnerships
The project is being led by the WA Department of Water (DoW) in partnership with the Kimberley Institute, the National Water Commission (NWC), Land & Water Australia and the NAILSMA Indigenous Water Policy Group (IWPG).
Outcomes
The project aims to engage Indigenous people in the Kimberley in discussion about Indigenous access to water as it relates to the La Grange Water Management Plan. This would not only augment previous Indigenous engagement in the La Grange process but contribute to the development of a position reflecting on the Indigenous Water Policy Group statement by focusing discussion on a local case study.
