Wilgara Wetland - sustainably managing wetlands

Eric Fishers family has been farming Wilgara since 1909. The cattle grazing property is in the heart of the Macquarie Marshes, one of Australia’s most significant wetlands. From an early age, Mr Fisher has been keen to conserve the natural and productive values of his property.

I am a strong believer in the ability to manage wetlands in a manner that enables economic sustainability, while at the same time looking after the environment’ says Mr Fisher.

Keen to put their ideas into practice, the Fishers became one of the first private landholders in Australia to list part of their property as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

This is the philosophy I used to manage Wilgara’.

The Land & Water Australia Community Fellowship will enable Eric Fisher to tell his story ‘Wilgara Wetland - sustainably managing wetlands’ to other land managers about getting the balance between cattle and conservation.
