A national framework for landscape classification

A national landscape framework was developed to improve classification of landscape variation and enhance landscape planning and management.

The framework matrix encompasses two biophysical variables (climate and vegetation structure) and two human impact variables (habitat replacement and habitat modification).

The framework captures most of the variation in landscapes and allows for robust generalisations and improved hypothesis testing. The framework was also used to assess the limits to generalisation of two sets of landscape management guidelines. Research gaps and framework limitations were also identified during the course of the project

Outcomes

To develop a conceptual classification of Australian landscapes that will be used to enhance the communication of information in the landscape planning and management arena through four phases:

  1. Develop a matrix framework which classifies landscapes across Australia on the basis of simple indicators
  2. Review this framework in consultation with experts across the regions
  3. Set boundaries for the generalisation of management principles using the framework
  4. Communicate the usefulness of the framework and examples of its application to a range of stakeholders
