Ecological thresholds for native vegetation management in southern Queensland

Remnant native vegetation has been greatly fragmented by land development in Australia,however there is little data available on the long-term impacts of such fragmentation on the ecological integrity of remnants.This project attempted to provide data about these long-term impacts and revise the principles behind assessment of land clearing, leading to improved prescriptions for the management of remnant native vegetation.

Final Report

In originally proposing this project, we had three main motivations: to bring new ideas and analytical methods to bear on native vegetation management; to emphasise the importance of landscape and biodiversity dynamics; and to reach policy audiences.

Biodiversity dynamics, habitat loss and disturbance in the NSW wheatbelt

This project explored the dynamic nature of vegetation and the animals that depend on it, through a combination of modelling and field studies. It focused at the landscape level aiming to provide a more realistic basis for regional planning in the New South Wales wheatbelt.

Testing approaches to landscape design in cropping lands

This project evaluated currently used methods for determining where revegetation should be located in the landscape for the additional purposes of determining how much revegetation is required, and whether revegetation designed for one group of species meets the needs of other groups of species.

Improved vegetation planning for rural landscapes

This project used Landscape Function Analysis to evaluate the performance of two existing approaches to vegetation planning: the ‘Focal Species Approach’ and ‘Thresholds Approach’.
