Identifying and characterising the social assets of Australia

The term ‘social assets’ describes those characteristics of the social system which enable the longer term conservation, repair or replenishment of natural assets (NRM outcomes), and comprises those characteristics of the social system which include specific social entities, such as resource managers, NRM organisations and institutions; the attributes or characteristics of social entities, which may also reflect their capacity to adopt sustainable management practices; and the relationships and partnerships amongst social entities, including the capacity of social entities to influence others in the achievement of sustainable NRM outcomes. This report informs NRM practitioners and policy makers on the role different social assets play in achieving NRM outcomes.

Integrated natural and cultural resource management for pastoral properties in the East Kimberley project - learnings of the project

The research project highlighted the challenges involved in promoting sustainable development on Indigenous-held pastoral properties in the East Kimberley. Cultural traditions and aspirations, conventional natural resource management (NRM) practices and institutional issues all need to be addressed simultaneously to improve management outcomes in northern Australia. Integrated planning options identified by the project informed policy makers on indigenous NRM practice and highlighted weaknesses in existing policies.

Improving integration in NRM: learning from health, security and innovation

Researchers and practitioners in natural resource management (NRM) are faced with multi-faceted knowledge integration considerations. This project analysed integrative concepts and methods from NRM, environmental science, public health, technology and security. It focused on two classes of integration methods

dialogue-based and
common metrics-based.

The findings are presented as a monograph on dialogue-based methods and a paper on common metrics-based methods. This work contributes to finding better solutions to the complex problems facing society.
