Native vegetation extent and distribution

The extent of remaining native vegetation types compared to their pre-1750 extent (prior to European settlement) is a key input to conservation and land management decisions, both for determining priorities and for planning actions. It is an important indicator of the status of a region’s natural resource base and the health of its landscapes and assists in the interpretation of impacts of landscape change since European settlement. This indicator can also be used to determine which vegetation (more)...

Indicator protocols: the extent of each priority native vegetation type by IBRA sub-region (measured in hectares)

Native vegetation extent and distribution

Native vegetation types are useful surrogates for the extent of ecosystem types. An understanding of the diversity of native vegetation types and how they may be changing over time provides an insight to the provision of a range of potential ecosystem services. For example, where a vegetation type corresponds with the recognised habitat for an endangered species, the monitoring of changes in extent of that vegetation type assists in tracking the likely status of the species concerned. South Australia Native Vegetation Extent Baseline and Monitoring

Final Report

This report documents the work undertaken to create a 2004 baseline for native vegetation mapping in SA. The work was undertaken with funding from National Land and Water Resources Audit (NLWRA). All state’s and territories were undertaking equivalent projects to create a national baseline extent layer that will inform the status of native vegetation for Australia’s Natural Resource Management. The work also undertook to identify the (more)...

Queensland Native Vegetation Extent Baseline & Monitoring

Final Report

The project objectives from the Project Schedule (Annexure A of the contract with National Land and Water Resources Audit for project number: EPQ7 – P332) are: utilise existing vegetation extent information to report against M&E indicators; develop web service products of the above data for reporting through Australia’s Resources online; and, test use of foliage projective cover data for monitoring of (more)...

Native Vegetation Extent Baseline and Monitoring for Tasmania

Final Project Report

The Native Vegetation Extent Baseline and Monitoring for Tasmania project has successfully completed and extended the predecessor Monitoring Vegetation Extent project (MVEP). The current project has implemented statewide the change detection methodology developed and trialled in the MVEP, to generate information on vegetation change from the time of TASVEG mapping up to 2005 (more)...

Native vegetation

Status of information for reporting against indicators under the National Natural Resources Management Monitoring and Evaluation Framework

This booklet is part of a series that describes the status of data and information relevant to national indicators agreed under the National Natural Resource Management Monitoring and Evaluation Framework. It specifically reports on the status of information relating to indicators of native vegetation communities’ integrity.   Effective management of natural resources requires good quality data and information at the right level of detail to be available for those who need (more)...
